Robotic Surgery for Kidney Reconstruction
One of the advantages of robotic surgery is that it enables the surgeon to suture and perform precision movements with greater ease than pure laparoscopic surgery. Kidney procedures are no exception to this rule when they require reconstruction during cancer surgery (partial nephrectomy) or reconstruction of the drainage system of the kidney (pyeloplasty) for such conditions as the ureteropelvic junction obstruction.
Robotic surgery acts as an additive benefit for both surgeon and patient to decrease operative time during these surgeries and is also performed laparoscopically which decreases both patient discomfort and hospital stay. Although less common than prostate surgery in the field of urologic surgery, robotic surgery has enhanced our ability to perform more precise reconstructive kidney surgery.
